Having a blog can benefit your small business in so many different ways. It doesn’t matter if you’re a service business, sell products or sell your art. Even if you don’t like writing, or you have no idea how to do it, it’s totally okay. It’s a skill that you can learn and master, like any other skill. Nobody is born a professional writer.
There are actually many different ways you can blog. If you cannot find time to write long and informative articles on your website, or maybe you don’t enjoy writing at all. You can always make a short video on Youtube, do microblogging on your social media, or do a podcast. I believe that it’s important to find your voice and to find a way to show up that you genuinely enjoy.
Because when you don’t enjoy and try to convince yourself every single day that you enjoy something, believe me, you will run out of resources, inspiration and energy to blog very fast. People can sense when something was done with joy and it attracts them.
On the other hand, to find what you enjoy doing, you need to try many different things before you can find this one thing. Because when you just imagine or are convinced that you hate blogging, and yet you have never written a single blog post in your entire life, how can you even know if you like it or not?
When I just started my business, I used to believe that I hated blogging too. But I think that a thing that was here for me is that I didn’t care about teaching foreign languages, I didn’t enjoy it, and it was not something I wanted to do. And of course why in the world would enjoy blogging about something I’m not passionate about?! I guess back then I was still afraid, to be honest with myself, and try to find my real passion.
When I started to dig deeper and uncover things that I really enjoy, the blogging process changed completely for me. I started to enjoy it more. I started to learn how to write better.
Here are some benefits a blog can do for your business and your small business website.
Your blog should educate and inspire your readers. A blog doesn’t have a direct objective to sell to your audience right away, although, it has a marketing objective. The more you educate and share your knowledge, and expertise, the more you grow your authority. When your authority grows, your audience gets a chance to know you better, like you, and trust you, and it becomes so much easier to sell to them.
Numerous studies show that your potential clients need to have on average 7 touch points with you and your content before they decide to buy from you. So be patient, and have trust in yourself, in your expertise and in what you do. You don’t need to know everything when you start. You can start small, and grow your expertise and authority over time.
To my mind this advantage of blogging is huge. How many times have you been stuck, not knowing what to post on your social media, what to share with your audience, feeling like you have nothing to say? Of course, planning your content can help you a lot. But when you need to create a new piece of content every single time you want to share something, it gets difficult.
But what if I told you that from one blog post you will be able to create endless pieces of content: posts for different social media platforms, videos, reels, and so much more. You won’t be obliged to create a new piece of information every time you would like to say something. You will kill two birds with one stone, not only will you attract a new audience on social media, you will promote your blog, and you will drive more traffic to your website, and as a result, more opt-ins in your email list.
Businesses that have blogs on their website get on average 55% more traffic in comparison to businesses websites that don’t have a blog. It’s important to have some sort of valuable information on your website, otherwise, people won’t stay for a long time on your website.
Having a blog gives you more chances to appear in Google searches when people are searching for a specific type of information. It gives you the possibility to gain readers who might never have heard of you otherwise.
When you attract more traffic from the internet and social media to your website and share some valuable information, it gives you the possibility to gain more leads for your email list. So even if some part of your audience won’t buy from your right away, it gives you a chance to remarket to them through email marketing, or maybe propose some special offers later.
Of course, not all readers will join your email list, but it’s okay. You don’t need everybody. Even a small amount of a very loyal audience can make a difference in your business.
That’s why it’s important to finish every blog post you write with a call to action. You need to have something to do when people finish reading your blog post. Don’t forget a CTA after every single blog post you have.
We are always as human beings searching for somebody we can relate to, somebody who has a similar experience, or background, somebody who can understand our struggles. It somehow makes us feel closer to the person, it creates an impression that we know this person better. It makes us trust more and create an emotional connection.
When you write, you can really express and show your unique personal voice, show up more as a person, and share your personal experience. It’s exactly what creates a deeper human connection with your audience and makes you stand out in the world when everything can be found on the internet.
You can nurture your existing audience and attract new people to join your tribe.
There is a limited amount of words you can use on your website to describe your business and speak about yourself. Blog posts give you the possibility to use endless amounts of keywords to speak about your business and your field of expertise.
A blog keeps your website active and up to date, which Google and all other search engines love! When you share relevant and helpful, engaging information with your audience, it makes Google prioritize your website over other similar websites that have zero helpful information.
Blog posts give you the possibility to help build links on your website. Link building is the third most important factor when it comes to SEO. Links in your blog post make your reader spend more time on your website, reading some other pieces of content you’ve created. Google love it! I started to see you as an authoritative source of information.Â
For us as human beings can be very difficult to delay gratification. When we start doing something we would like to start seeing results right now and don’t make too much effort. It’s actually very normal behaviour, your brain doesn’t want you to spend too much energy. Your brand wants to do what is comfortable, and familiar with the least effort possible. That’s why probably we have so much respect for and adore people who can delay gratification and can create long-term extraordinary results.
The same goes for blogging. In most cases, you won’t see great results right at the beginning of your blogging journey. It will take time to create a blog, build authority, and be consistent. But once you can pass the first stage, and stick to it, make blogging your habit, you will be able to create long-term results for your business.
Most of the sales and lead generation often come from old blog posts. They can even come from blog posts that you wrote several years ago. Some of your blog posts can become popular in different periods, and the more they become popular, the more Google helps to push them even more.
So don’t give up when you don’t see immediate results, it’s okay. It doesn’t mean that something doesn’t work. Put your work out there, analyze your results, fail, and keep going!
There are both pros and cons to having a blog. It takes time to write blog posts and to promote them, and sometimes some blog posts can simply don’t work for your business. Although, you can try different types of blogging before you find what you enjoy.
Even if blogging takes time, it’s totally worth it. In a long run, it can save you time by repurposing content, it can drive traffic to your website, helping you to establish trust among your audience, improve your website’s SEO, and convert your website traffic into leads. So even if you think that you hate blogging, or don’t write skills, it can be a good idea to try.
